Carbon Cleaning & Walnut Blasting

Over time, carbon builds up in your car’s intake manifold and intake valves which can lead to a dip in performance and an increase in fuel consumption – neither great options, particularly with fuel costs as high as they now are.

At Promotive we are pleased to offer a solution to this problem at our workshop in Newport – walnut blasting. This is now regarded as one of the safest and most effective methods of clearing out carbon from inside your car. Walnut blasting uses crushed walnut shells which are forced along by compressed air and gently break down the built-up carbon. The crushed shells are softer than the metal that makes up the intake manifold and valves so there’s no chance of those being damaged, but they’re hard enough to get rid of the carbon deposits.

There are a few things that you can do yourself to help prevent carbon build-up:

• Give the engine a chance to get really hot and burn off some of the carbon by getting out on the motorway and giving the car a good blast.
• Keeping your ECU software up to date can in some cases, avoid any carbon building up at all.
• Make sure that you have the oil in your engine changed regularly and only use good-quality synthetic oil if you’re topping it up yourself.
• Filling up with high-octane fuel burns hotter than the alternatives and so will burn away more of the carbon, leaving less to clog up your intake valve.
